A Checklist Before You Leave

Review risk ratings and travel policies

Check to see whether your destination is included on the Harvard GSS Travel Risk Ratings list, and take the appropriate precautions.

Students, review the travel policy that correlates to your School and your destination’s risk rating.

Research your destination

Learn as much as you can about your destination so that you can feel comfortable in your new environment. The International SOS member portal and our Resources section are good places to start.

Register your trip

Enter your itinerary in MyTrips so that International SOS and our staff can locate you and provide assistance in an emergency. Also register with the embassy of your country of citizenship.

Learn about International SOS

Review the services and eligibility guidelines of our 24/7 global emergency response program.

During a medical or security incident abroad, you can contact International SOS by phone at +1-617-998-0000 or by starting a chat or call from within the Assistance App.

To expedite assistance, it’s crucial that your itinerary is entered in MyTrips.

Check visa requirements

Visa and passport requirements vary by country, citizenship, length of stay, and purpose of travel. Carefully review your destination's requirements and plan well in advance. We've negotiated a reduced rate with a visa vendor that can provide guidance (free of charge) and application assistance (for a fee).

Verify your health insurance coverage

Call your health insurance provider to determine whether you’re covered in your destination and whether there are limitations to your plan and network of providers. The University's International SOS membership is not a replacement for health insurance coverage.

Schedule a health consultation

See your health care provider or visit a travel clinic at least one month prior to departure to obtain any necessary vaccinations or medications based on your personal health and your destination’s health risks.
